Technology Support Scam

A new scam is gaining popularity. This new scam, called “Vishing” is derived from Voice over internet Protocol, or VoIP. Vishing is a technique, much like Phishing that allows criminals to maliciously gain access to your personal and confidential information for the purpose of identity theft. Vishing is performed through phone calls, directly or by use of VoIP.

The fraudster claims to be from a security division or technology support within Microsoft or working on their behalf. They will ask you to provide personal information through VoIP, or convince you to download malicious software or even allow them access to your computer, where they can gain access to your personal and confidential information.

Anyone who receives this type of call should simply hang up the phone and do not give any information. This applies to any unsolicited call or email. It is best to simply hang up or delete the email or text. Do NOT respond or engage in any way.
